Från New York Times When Sand Dunes Collide, Sometimes They Mate and Multiply:
Veit Schwämmle, a physicist, conducted the research with a colleague at the University of Stuttgart using a computer program that predicted what would happen when one of the crescent-shaped dunes called barchans (pronounced bar-KAHNS) wandered into another.
