The web is increasingly becoming visually oriented, progressing from text to photos and other rich media. Close to 10 million new photos are uploaded on a daily basis, a number which is doubling every eight to ten months.

Photos tell many stories, but unlike text, the context of a photo is hard to search for unless explicitly "translated" by a human being. The photo web of today is like the text web before Altavista, Inktomi, and Google.

Polar Rose makes photos searchable by analyzing their content and recognizing the people in them.

Det här blogginlägget hos Polar Rose, om approximering av ett 3d-ansikte utifrån ett foto, var lite cool.

Eller ja, tekniken var väl det coola, inte själva inlägget. Men ändå.

Varje gång jag drar en strumpa över handen, vränger tåspetsen innåt och börjar göra "gapande" rörelser med den därvid erhållna öppningen så associerar jag till Bengt Westerberg. Kan detta möjligen vara kulturellt betingat.

Som pappa till en liten ettåring kan jag för övrigt inte undgå att se vilken fascination hon har för just ansikten. Hon har som platta nallebjörnar i trä som består av några uppsättningar fötter, kroppar och huvuden som kan kombineras på vafritt sätt. Varje gång hon tar fram dem så slänger hon all fot- och kroppsbrickor och så sitter hon och sorterar och vrider och vänder på ansiktena. Utom den arga lilla björnen som hon gömmer under soffan, bakom pianot eller mellan två lp-skivor.
