Bibliomining - data mining for libraries

Detta låter onekligen spännande. Är detta månne något för de svenska biblioteken, eller de kanske redan använder tekniken?

Bibliomining - Data mining for libraries. Termen bibliomining förklaras på följande sätt:

The basic definition is "data mining for libraries."

For years, bibliometrics has been used to track patterns in authorship, citation, etc. Today, there are many more tools available for discovering similar patterns in complex datasets from data mining and statistics. In addition, tools from management science such as Online Analytical Processing (OLAP) can be used to explore the data for patterns.

Therefore, a more complex definition is:
Bibliomining is the combination of data mining, bibliometrics, statistics, and reporting tools used to extract patterns of behavior-based artifacts from library systems.

FAQ:n förklarar - uppenbarligen på förekommen anledning - att det inte är frågan om att hitta individuella låntagare (etc) utan generella mönster.

The goal is _not_ to get to the individual patron level. Instead, the goal is to look for patterns of behavior of either large groups of patrons, staff, or both to help the library managers make better management decisions.

It may be that it's useful to look at the broad demographic groups that a patron is in (like age range), but it would be unethical (and in many cases, impossible or illegal) to look at the individual patron level without the permission of the patron.
